In recent months, Giovanni Maria Vian, the editor- in- chief of L’Osservatore Romano has been increasingly criticized for his unusual opinions as he continues to paint President Barack Obama in a palette of gentle hues.

In a recent interview with the National Review we are cautioned to first consider Giovanni Maria Vians background and religious education, before issuing judgments about his opinions, as editor of L’Osservatore Romano. The objective of this consideration is that we are not to assume that he has “ dropped in from left- field.”

THE WANDERER - JULY 2nd, 2009 EDITION - FRONT PAGE - FURTHER REFLECTION ON THE HIJACKING OF L'OSSERVATORE ROMANO by MARIELENA MONTESINO de STUART

Well, if we apply this norm, I would say we have cause to be quite worried — considering the following record and common thread among several Communist leaders of the 20th and 21st centuries: religious education and socialist ideology. While this by no means represents that one leads to the other — it is nevertheless, worthy of note that:

Joseph Stalin ( former USSR) attended a Georgian Orthodox Seminary; Fidel Castro ( Cuba) educated at a Jesuit boarding school; Kim Il-Sung (North Korea) educated at a Protestant mission school; Pol Pot (Cambodia) attended École Miche, a Catholic school; Ho Chi Minh ( Vietnam) was immersed in Confucian home- schooling; Bela Kun ( Hungary) attended a Reformed church boarding school; Khorloogiin Choibalsan ( Mongolia) studied at a monastery of Lamaist ( Buddhist) Monks.

Why do I mention this? Because the religious education of an individual can only bear good fruit if the individual is well formed to discern and combat a secular environment that is intrinsically hostile to goodness.

Religious education, in and of itself, coupled with originality, philosophical sophistication, literary genius, and intellectual power, is no guarantee in the formation of a good human being — unless there is clear understanding of good and evil, in their most subtle manifestations.

As Catholics in America grow deeper in despair about their government, it would seem obvious that they would look to the Vatican as the legitimate center and source of all things clear, when it comes to political issues, free enterprise, and the defense of human life. The Vatican, after all, has refined the system of corporations which allowed the average individual to pursue economic freedom within a set of guidelines that encompass the protection of a free market economy, and the individual’s freedom to pursue it. The Vatican, after all, has also been the lone voice in the wilderness, in defense of moral imperatives that others consider mere options.

The economic and social horizon continues to narrow in the U. S., and economists and sociologists have begun to express their outrage at the increase of government financial takeovers, brought about in part by the overwhelming control and planning from the Federal Reserve. We are also faced with the menace of a state that will control who will live and who will die, under socialist healthcare systems.

Given this grim scenario, it would also seem obvious that we, as Catholics, should hear through the newspaper which acts “at the service of the thinking of the Pope” a firm and clear message from the Vatican regarding the benefits of natural law — both in terms of the economy and in the nonnegotiable defense of human life.

Yet, if one considers his recent judgment of Obama, Vian would have us think that these are times for reflection on the possibility that inherent evil, may not be so. That our perception of the threat to human life may not be true. This sense of re- enlightened misinformation is at its best subtle, and at its worse, misleading. A dangerous game indeed, with issues that are considered categorical imperatives — issues that admit no exceptions.

Which begs the question: Is Vian issuing his opinions in consultation with the Secretariat of State? Yes, says Vian to the National Review, and insists that the Secretary of State, Tarcisio Cardinal Bertone, is fully aware of his editorial excursions. Vian also claims that L’Osservatore Romano is “the newspaper of the Pope” and that his “editor, in the Italian sense of the owner of the paper, is the Pope, via the Secretary of State,” and he goes on to say that he “could not possibly create a paper in disagreement with the owner.” He added that “the Pope and the Secretary of State have so far given me and the newspaper their full confidence,” and “we work in full autonomy except in a few areas of particular interest on international questions, and then we work in close collaboration with the Secretariat of State.”

Well, either Vian is saying the truth, or there is a key ingredient missing in this sauce: accurate facts. If Vian enjoys full autonomy on everything except “international questions” — then, does this mean that nuclear disarmament, Iran, Korea, China — are more important to Benedict XVI than the destruction of civilization through the extermination of over 50 million human beings through abortion — in the U. S. alone? Does this also mean that the Pope, as “ the owner” leaves the discussion of abortion in L’Osservatore Romano in the hands of Giovanni Maria Vian, so that Vian can refer to it as a “ delicate matter”?

Vian goes on to say that L’Osservatore Romano “is mis-used by everyone for their own agenda.” Well, this is probably true, and it confirms that L’Osservatore Romano is not following a clear path of understanding and reflection of the opinions of “ its owner” ( Benedict XVI); therefore, it’s time that Vian stop playing pirate in the high seas of journalism — and that a new editor be ushered in al più presto possibile.

Vian defines himself as a European. An Italian. Well — what an existential discovery! He claims that he is not a liberal, nor a socialist. What he clearly leaves out of his existential equation is the word “Catholic.” Well, Mr. Vian, you are the editor- in- chief of the world’s most prominent Roman Catholic newspaper. As such, your most prominent identification should be as a Catholic, which would then naturally involve a true and SOLID representation of “ the owner’s” thinking — who after all, is the successor of Peter ( remember “ the ROCK”?).

One can imagine that the Vatican, which moves in God’s time, would not like the idea of a scandal and expulsion of the editor- in- chief, of a newspaper which acts “ at the service of the thinking of the Pope.”

Vian ends his interview with the National Review, by taking a cheap shot at news reporters and bloggers — and referring to them as “ going to the bar where everyone has their own opinion.” Does this mean that Vian’s opinion is the only one that counts? He also alludes to the fact that Americans don’t really understand L’Osservatore Romano because they cannot read every article in Italian.

Well, Mr. Vian, in this bar of ideas I can read you in Italian, very well and between the lines — and reflected in my cup of noble wine I see your words and opinions as nothing but a cosmic game of heads or tails.  Cin cin.

ave-maria-all-rights-reserved-by-marielena-montesino-de-stuart1The Roman Catholic World wishes to congratulate the members of the Board of Trustees of Ave Maria University for their brave decision in voting to appoint His Excellency, Bishop Frank J. Dewane, as an ex officio member of the board.  This is an important first step in the process of seeking official Catholic recognition from the Church (particularly when claiming to be an Ex Corde Ecclesiae institution); however, other important requirements must still be met before such official Catholic recognition can be granted.

+     +     +

NOW, ONE PONDERS…

Is… Ave Maria University president, Nick Healy (a former maritime lawyer) thrilled about Bishop Dewane’s new participation on the board?

How… do the members of the Board of Trustees feel about Nick Healy’s reaction to their decision?

Did… Tom Monaghan support the board’s decision– or did he just go along with it?  Are there serious concerns regarding the financial state and viability of the university under the direction of Nick Healy, that left no other choice for Mr. Monaghan?

To learn why it has taken  Ave Maria University over six years to take this first step towards official Catholic recognition from the Church, please read:

and,

The Chronicles of Ave Maria©:  News and Unanswered  Questions:

http://romancatholicworld.wordpress.com/2009/03/26/ave-maria-news-and-questions/

THE FOLLOWING IMPORTANT QUESTIONS MUST NOW BE ASKED:

1) Will the administration of Ave Maria University show transparency as to the financial state and viability of the institution?

2) Has the administration of Ave Maria University committed any injustices towards employees and members of the community that need to be corrected, as a fundamental aspect of an institution seeking to be officially recognized as Catholic?

3) What is the status of further accreditation?

4) What is the status of the Pre-Theologate Program?

5) Will the administration of AMU fully and joyfully support Summorum Pontificum, as an essential part of being authentically Catholic?

And… what about the crew?   Will there be mutiny on the Bounty?

Imagine that you are creating a fabric of human destiny with the object of making men happy in the end, giving them peace and rest at last — but that it was essential and inevitable to torture to death only one tiny creature . . . and to found that edifice on its unavenged tears, would you consent to be the architect on those conditions? Tell me, and tell the truth —  The Brothers Karamazov.

+ + +

A dangerous and divisive precedent is being set by the hijacking of L’Osservatore Romano, at the hands of its editor, Giovanni Maria Vian. Vian has chosen, through his editorial position, to smooth out and present a positive and speculative view of what has been President Obama’s well- established support of the culture of death.

Vian has emphasized in a positive light President Obama’s call for a “ common ground” as well as a palatable “ conscience clause” for those in the field of medicine who are against abortion. Vian has also declared that Obama “ is not an advocate of abortion.” As part of his editorial balancing act, L’Osservatore Romano  has mentioned the protests at Notre Dame University, and has also criticized Obama’s support of embryonic stem-cell research.

L’Osservatore Romano benefits from having editorial independence, but it also acts “at the service of the thinking of the pope” and works closely with the Vatican’s Secretariat of State, headed by Tarcisio Cardinal Bertone.

Vian, who has been the editor of L’Osservatore Romano since September 2007, seems to overlook the fact that over 60 bishops expressed their strong indignation over Notre Dame’s invitation to President Obama, as clear evidence that Catholic Americans are slowly hardening their attitude against Obama’s abortion stance. Vian, instead, has defended his benevolent view of Obama in an interview with the Italian daily, Il Riformista, which I have read in the original Italian. In this interview Vian refers to abortion as “ un terreno delicatissimo” (very delicate grounds/issue). Vian went on to say that he is reassured and clearly convinced that “ Obama non è un presidente abortista” (President Obama is not an advocate of abortion).

Vian also said to Il Riformista that “ if an Episcopal conference takes place, we naturally report what is said; however, we consider that, when appropriate, we can provide other facts related to international information, for one’s judgment.” Really — Mr. Vian, so the Vatican wants your readers to consider international opinion on the killing of babies? I wonder how  His Eminence James Francis Cardinal Stafford feels about your editorial opinions. Cardinal Stafford courageously described Obama as “ aggressive, disruptive, and apocalyptic.” Cardinal Stafford also warned that Obama campaigned on an “ extremist anti-life platform.” Archbishop Raymond Burke has also stated that, “ The path of violation of the most fundamental human rights and of the integrity of marriage and the family which our nation is traveling is not accidental. As Catholics, we cannot fail to notice with the greatest sadness the number of our fellow Catholics who cooperate fully to the advancement of a national agenda which is anti- life and anti- family.”

It is indisputable that Italians have a genius quality about them. Italians are well known for the “ art of living” — and are also famous for the art of protecting their “ bella figura” — which has nothing to do with their figure, but everything to do with how the world sees them. To that end, Vian has taken his concern about his own “ bella figura” to another level — and has hijacked L’Osservatore Romano, and the Vatican along with it. He has ingratiated himself with the socialists, and has overlooked the opinions of the members of the Roman Curia and the Church’s hierarchy with one stroke of his pen — or one click of his laptop’s “ Send” button. In other words, he has appeased the barbarians.

This unrealistic approach to the needs, opinions, and realities of the American people, and in this particular case, of Catholics in America, is not foreign to me. I have dealt both professionally and socially with a great number of Europeans and Latin Americans who issue their poorly based socialist opinions with an elitist attitude that has frankly gone beyond monotonous and outdated. It has always astonished me how the socialists seem to contrive a sense of moral superiority.

This type of old socialist rhetoric is not Catholic, and does not provide anything of value to the fight for human life — by referring to abortion as a “ delicate” matter. Vian’s simplistic acceptance of Obama’s speech as a convincing turning point indicating that he is not a pro- abortion president, does not present the intellectual depth and decorum worthy of a newspaper that is “ at the service of the thinking of the pope” — nor does it represent the doctrinal and historical position of the Vatican, against this kind of weak socialist jargon.

Every Pope, from Leo XIII to Benedict XVI, has rebuked socialism, and has passionately defended human life. What Giovanni Maria Vian is doing is nothing less than participating in a “divide and conquer” agenda against, and within, the Vatican — which is the only state left in the world that can effectively argue against the socialist pro- abortion manipulations that are taking place. This is nothing but an attempt to fool the masses into thinking that a socialist has the solution for our problems — lest we forget that it was the capitalist West, aided by the Vatican, which compelled the socialist East to treat their citizens as human beings with fundamental rights, rather than as pawns in a game of chess.

Mr. Vian, in his claim that Obama “ non è un presidente abortista,” has failed to do his homework — or is simply trying to ignore some facts. Obama’s extremist voting record as a former state senator from Illinois shows that he opposed the Born Alive Infant Protection Act, that was introduced to protect babies who survive botched abortions. Obama has consistently voted to defend “ pro- choice,” and has surrounded himself by cabinet members that are “ pro-choice,” including several so- called Catholics, such as former Kansas Governor, Kathleen Sebelius. Sebelius, who is now serving Obama as Secretary of Health and Human Services, was asked by Kansas City Archbishop Joseph Fred Naumann to refrain from receiving Holy Communion because of her position on abortion. During questions from the Senate Finance Committee during her April 2009 confirmation hearing, Sebelius stated that she received $12,450 between 1994 and 2001 from Dr. George Tiller — one of those infamous doctors in the United States who was involved in performing uncounted late- term abortions.

Obama has just selected Sonia Sotomayor, a probable “ pro- choice” defender, to become the next Supreme Court Justice — and Obama’s choice of Liberation Theologian and strong Obama supporter, Mario H. Diaz, as ambassador to the Holy See, is nothing but a divisive incursion into the Vatican.

With all this evidence in plain view, Giovanni Maria Vian seems convinced and content with a simplistic acceptance that Obama “is not an advocate of abortion” because the Freedom of Choice Act may not be a priority at this time in his agenda.  L’Osservatore Romano has also given Obama very positive reviews during his first 100 days in office.

In Mr. Vian’s quest to educate his readers on other “ informazione internazionale,” has he considered the document written by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops titled Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship? This document states that “the direct and intentional destruction of innocent human life from the moment of conception until natural death is always wrong and is not just one issue among many. It must always be opposed.” This document made it very clear that abortion was the most important issue in the 2008 presidential election. It did not say that it was a “delicate issue.”

There is a key battlefront, and it is the protection of human life. The Western tradition of liberty and all the values that emanate from it, cannot stand without the passionate defense of human life. Incremental concessions to participants in the culture of death will lead to self- destruction. As historian Arnold Toynbee once said, “ Civilizations die from suicide, not murder.”

The Church is not a merchant that needs to negotiate or lower its price. The Church does not need to be moderate. We, Roman Catholics the world- over, are not detached spirits in the theater of life. We are part of an intellectual heritage that stands firm against these alien modern philosophies. Vian’s statements can strike a blow against the pro-life cause, because he is using his editorial privileges to impose an opinion which distorts the Vatican’s solid stand on the defense of human life. Fortunately, for Catholics who wish to inform themselves, the Holy See has a concrete and compelling record of the Church’s hierarchy and their tenacious voices in the protection of human life. It should put to rest any misunderstandings created by Vian’s (hopefully short lived) editorial liberties at L’Osservatore Romano.

Benedict XVI is expecting a visit from Barack Obama in July, during the G8 meetings. The fight for human life will be discussed. No international opinions will be heard. Nor will there be any competing voices, except those of the unborn — who will hear the angel of death knocking on their door.
