THE CHRONICLES OF AVE MARIA©: AVE MARIA UNIVERSITY– IS AVE MARIA UNIVERSITY’S ADMINISTRATION TELLING THE TRUTH?

The Roman Catholic World

November 25, 2009

UPDATE:  The Cardinal Newman Society denounces Ave Maria University’s administration for honoring pro-choice politician / activist / billionaire Tom Golisano (which vindicates journalist Marielena Montesino de Stuart).

On August 20, 2009 Marielena Montesino de Stuart  wrote Part 3 of The Wanderer’s series “Ave Maria: The Promise, The Reality”– where she questioned the Cardinal Newman Society’s endorsement of Ave Maria University Read it HERE

The Golisano scandal completely proves  de Stuart’s accurate and insightful reporting on Ave Maria University’s administration.

IS  AVE MARIA UNIVERSITY’S ADMINISTRATION TELLING THE TRUTH?

By Marielena Montesino de Stuart

Marielena Montesino de Stuart, Journalist and Resident of Ave Maria, Refuses to be Silenced

If Ave Maria University’s administration is telling the truth that they wanted me banned from a press conference honoring  pro-choice politician / billionaire Tom Golisano– why have they banned me also from the entire 900+ acre campus, and threatened to arrest me for entering campus property?

This extreme measure is evidence that Ave Maria University’s administration is participating in a coordinated effort to control not just free speech, but also the movement of citizens inside Ave Maria.

Several key issues need to be addressed:

 1.      Does Ave Maria University administration have a legal right to issue this ban?  What exactly is this legal right?

 2.      What claims did the university administration present to the Collier County Sheriff  between 9:15am and 11:00am  on November 5, 2009, to justify pulling Sheriff deputies away from their duties, and using taxpayer’s funds, in order to attempt to have me arrested?

 3.      Who reported my behavior as “disruptive” to Ave Maria University?– after I had received an invitation, specifically as a reporter for both The Wanderer and www.TheRomanCatholicWorld.com, from Branden Blackmur at Falls Communications– an invitation which allowed me to attend the Golisano Press Conference.

 4.      Forrest Wallace, spokesman for the university, talked to Fox News about my ban  in terms of  “behaving in a civilized way in a public forum.”  Mr. Wallace emphasized to Fox News that my ban was based on questions I asked (as a taxpayer) at the town’s government Stewardship Committee Public Meeting– questions which Ave Maria University’s administration deemed “disruptive.”  This is also confirmed in AMU’s written statement given to the media.  An amazing decision– given that the Stewardship town government meetings have nothing to do with Ave Maria University matters.   The town’s government meeting took place on November 2nd, two days before my ban was issued by AMU’s administration.

Mr. Wallace has never had a conversation with me—in fact we have never been in each other’s company.  Mr. Wallace has never attended a Stewardship District town government meeting.  So, where exactly, Mr. Wallace, have you witnessed me “not behaving in a civilized way in a public forum”?   This is a serious and offensive statement that Mr. Wallace must back up with clear and factual evidence—since I have never attended a press conference nor a meeting at the university, nor have I ever behaved in an uncivilized way in a public forum—or anywhere, for that matter.

What is clearly uncivilized behavior is the university’s administration threatening a Catholic journalist , mother and resident of the town with arrest by Sheriff deputies, in the presence of her young children and her husband, without any legal basis.

Mr. Wallace also stated to Fox News that I am “uninformed”– about Golisano being honored by Ave Maria University, even though he is pro-choice.  Which part of Golisano’s long-standing “pro-choice” history am I “uninformed” about, Mr. Wallace?

5.      Who is reporting to the university’s administration what goes on at town government taxpayer  meetings?  The fact that I have been banished from over 900+ acres owned by the university, based on questions labeled as “disruptive” during a town government meeting which I attended as a taxpayer and property owner in Ave Maria, is evidence of a coordinated effort between the town’s governing board, the town’s developer and the university’s administration, to instill fear in town residents– by silencing free speech and by controlling their movement.

6.      Last week,  Nicholas J. Healy, Jr. (President of Ave Maria University) sent a letter to the students.  Mr. Healy’s letter is copied below in italics, in its entirety, with my comments in brackets:

My dear students,

As I am sure you know, the situation involving a town resident [that’s me] denied permission to be on our campus has generated publicity about supposed curbs on freedom of speech.

Let me make it clear.  We do not make any effort to restrict speech by students. [Except, when students criticize the university’s administration to a Fox News reporter]. Vigorous and open debate is an essential aspect of university life [except of course, when Mrs. Montesino de Stuart, a Catholic reporter, writes her opposing views in The Wanderer and www.TheRomanCatholicWorld.com – or when she attempts to ask questions the university’s administration does not  like, at a press conference].

Having said that, let me note two caveats:

News media are expected to follow established protocols if they wish to enter the campus. [I did, Mr. Healy.  I formally registered directly with Branden Blackmur, the head of your PR firm in charge of press invitations.  Stop hiding this fact!  Oh… but wait!  In the opening line of this letter you referred to me as a “town resident”.   So… make up your mind, Mr. Healy.  Did you ban me as a “town resident” for my participation as a taxpayer and property owner at an Ave Maria  town government meeting, unrelated to the university?  Or, did you ban me as a “journalist” because you don’t like my opposing views about the way that you go about your administrative activities at the university?]  We do need to avoid disruption of student activities and dorm life. [This was directed at a Fox News reporter who came to speak with two courageous students who spoke out against the university.  The Fox News reporter respectfully sat with the two students at the public reception area of the dorm, as their guest—until the Dean of Students and a dorm administrator ordered her to leave].

Interviews given to the media can wind up on YouTube or other outlets and surface again years later.  Things that might be hurtful or embarrassing to other students or to the faculty cannot be withdrawn once they are given to the media. [You mean “hurtful”-- as in trying to arrest a Catholic journalist, mother and resident of the town of Ave Maria, in front her children and husband, for trying to attend the Golisano Press Conference, for which she had received a formal invitation? You mean “embarrassing”—as in the embarrassment that your actions are causing to donors of Ave Maria University-- not to mention how The Cardinal Newman Society has denounced your decision to honor Tom Golisano-- a pro-choice politician / activist / billionaire?]

My hope is that you will let charity “rein”[Yes, folks—this is exactly how he spelled it—“rein”-- as in a strap or harness used to guide or check a horse.  Healy later sent out another version with the correct spelling—but by then, his Freudian slip had made the rounds of the internet, with every comical comment you can imagine].

Nicholas Healy

President

*********

After issuing the original ban, the university’s administration excepted the Oratory and the Adoration Chapel only.  The question remains—how do they propose I get to those rooms, since they are surrounded by the university property from which I am banned.   Helicopter?  Should the routes I can use be marked out with red tape, or a new Berlin Wall?  Or should I just take my chances that my children might witness their mother being arrested by Sheriff deputies aided by security guards employed by Ave Maria University—the entity that banned me and clearly doesn’t like me?  How many Sheriff deputies is the university administration going to pull away from their duties (using taxpayer’s money)  in a remote area such as this, which already lacks sufficient law enforcement presence?  These are Sheriff deputies whose presence is very much needed in the nearby town of Immokalee, which is well known for being a high crime area, not to mention other isolated communities in this area of the Everglades.

It is worthy of note that the Catholic Diocese of Venice in Florida contacted me through its Parish Administrator to assure my protection while in the Oratory and its grounds, as well as in  the Adoration Chapel—should the university administration arbitrarily interpret my presence as “disruptive”;  however, the university administration has not defined what constitutes the Adoration Chapel grounds, nor what constitutes “disruptive”.  The other chapels on the university campus have not been addressed yet.

Should my feelings be hurt that I am declared publicly to be such a menace to the peace and harmony of Ave Maria University that merely walking across the campus is some sort of danger?  That I could cause some “disruption” that their security guards could not handle?  Oprah?

Is Ave Maria University’s administration  telling the truth– that my ban is based on my unwelcome questions to the Stewardship District town government board— the same group that controls and taxes all of the property owners in Ave Maria without representation  (Read the Naples Daily News, May 9, 2009 article “Ave Maria:  A Town Without a Vote—Now and Forever”).  So, the questions I asked of the town’s governing board were the basis of the university’s administration labeling me as “disruptive”?   If this is true– why not also ban Mr. Klucik from the 900+ acre campus?  (Mr. Klucik made it a point to identify his full name several times on the public record).  Anyone who carefully listens  to the audio tape of the Stewardship Committee town government public meeting (available through Fox News and the Naples Daily News websites) can clearly hear Mr. Klucik  refusing to heed the Chair, and trying to interject answers to questions that I had directed to the town’s government Stewardship Committee.  So, does AMU have a double standard– one for residents and journalists who question and write things they do not like– the other for their supporters—however “disruptive”?

Is my banishment a life sentence, or 5-10 years—or may I somehow get a parole hearing or probation?  To whom do I apply, Mr. Monaghan?  To the town government Stewardship District Committee?  To the Ave Maria University administration?  To the town’s developer, Barron Collier? Should I apply to all of the above, given their coordinated efforts?  If that fails, should I try President Obama?

Is it “disruptive” to question—even argue for a few minutes– not yelling—but simply argue with a town government committee that is stacked with Monaghan’s and Barron Collier’s appointees, not elected by the townspeople, when the committee refuses or seems to refuse to give straight answers to questions– and treats the townspeople as peasants (not voters) to be controlled and condescended to?  If so, why was Mr. Klucik not also banished from the campus?  Even  Paul Roney, CFO of Ave Maria University,  who also sits on the Stewardship District Committee, can be heard saying “Rob… Rob”–  as he tries to stop Mr. Klucik’s interruptions.

The fact is that the “disruptive” behavior cited is nothing but a minute or two of “back-and forth”—quite routine for meetings open to the public.  Evidently, the town government Stewardship District Board prefers a quiet, muted, obsequious audience.

Did this allegedly “disruptive” behavior put the Stewardship District Committee in fear of something?  A riot,  perhaps?  There were a total of eight property owners present, of which five were senior citizens.  Was the Stewardship District Committee afraid that I might lose my temper and assault them?  In other words, other than unwelcome questions and some minor argument over who had the floor, from a taxpayer and journalist that Ave Maria University and the town government do not indirectly control—exactly what did the Ave Maria University administration fear I would do at their press conference, that would have me banished from it– and from the entire 900+ acres surrounding it?  Was there some evidence I carried a Weapon of Mass Destruction?

Residents of Ave Maria were promised many things– including access to the Ave Maria University Library, student events, theatrical performances, campus dining facilities, etc., — access to the whole Ave Maria community, which is very tiny and limited anyway,  located in a remote area of the Everglades– and completely surrounded by swamps.

Does Mr. Monaghan and the Ave Maria University administration he controls care if their draconian banishment of a journalist, and permanent resident of Ave Maria – banishment not merely from a press conference or press conference room—but from the entire campus, imposes a terrible burden on her family and effectively imprisons them to a tiny area with extremely limited services and cultural opportunities—despite the access promised to the Catholic community?  This included the university promised to residents.  Is that fair, or reasonable, or just—or Catholic?

Does Mr. Monaghan and the university administration he controls care that on the evening of November 19th, the day that the relic of Mary Magdalene was brought to the Ave Maria Oratory, my children and I had to leave a Rosary procession—when Father Robert Garrity, in charge of the Ave Maria University campus ministry, led the procession completely into the university campus—from which I have been banished?  Did Father Garrity–  who was completely aware of my presence and my children’s presence at the front of this procession,  even care that we had to leave the procession because he was leading it into university property, where he knows I’m not allowed?  Processions are generally carried out on the street surrounding the Oratory.

Fox Television News was banned from the campus a few days ago, when their reporter tried to interview two students that courageously spoke out against the university’s administration.  How many more journalists will the Ave Maria University’s administration exile for asking questions they do not like?  Should all journalists fear “banishment” from the entire campus if they do not “behave themselves”– or act “civilized”—as the university’s spokesman, Forrest Wallace, said on Fox News?  What exactly is this measure of “behavior” that the university administration expects?

Like I’ve said before– what could be more uncivilized than a university administration threatening to arrest a Catholic journalist who believed in Ave Maria University’s Catholic promises so much, that she and her husband bought a home in Ave Maria and brought their young children to live here?

Should other town residents fear banishment from the entire campus if they don’t behave according to the unknown standard imposed by Ave Maria University on me?  Who’s next?

Finally, isn’t such banishment of a journalist and resident of Ave Maria—and effectively of her entire family, with nowhere else to go in these swamplands– counterproductive– and, very frankly, embarrassing for Ave Maria University and its donors?

PRESS RELEASE – FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Today, the Catholic Diocese of Venice in Florida  notified me through its Parish Administrator that I am able to enter the Ave Maria Oratory and to walk on its grounds.  The same applies to the Adoration Chapel, except that the university administration has not identified what constitutes the Adoration Chapel grounds.

While Ave Maria University is the owner of the Oratory property and the Adoration Chapel property, the Catholic Diocese of Venice in Florida is in charge of their administration.

The Catholic Diocese of Venice in Florida assures me of my protection in the Oratory and its grounds, in the event that the university administration arbitrarily interprets my presence as trespassing or “disruptive.”   All of the above applies equally to the Adoration Chapel.

The other chapels on the university campus property have not been addressed yet.

As of this press release Ave Maria University’s ban, preventing me from entering university property,  has not been lifted.   This ban took place on November 5, 2009, shortly before the Press Conference honoring Tom Golisano was to begin.

It is important to note that on November 4, 2009 I received a press invitation to attend said press conference.  The invitation was issued directly by Branden Blackmur at Falls Communications.

Ave Maria University Honors Pro-Choice Politician / Billionaire “Tom” Golisano,

Bans Catholic Reporter from Press Conference

Statement to the Naples Daily News

 by Marielena Montesino de Stuart

E-Mail:  ContactTRCW@aol.com

Marielena Montesino de Stuart, Journalist and Resident of Ave Maria, Refuses to be Silenced

America’s oldest Catholic newspaper, The Wanderer, assigned me to cover Ave Maria.  Of the articles I have written for The Wanderer, only four have been about Ave Maria University.  Yet, the University, of which Nick Healy is the President, banned me from Tom Golisano’s press conference on November 5th, and from the entire campus– allegedly for being disruptive at a public meeting held by the town’s Stewardship Committee.  Stewardship Committee meetings have nothing to do with Ave Maria University.

The hubris and lack of credibility in that excuse of President Healy is evident.

Ave Maria University’s heavy handedness in not only banning me from the press conference, but also from the entire campus with County Sheriff deputies, shows how frightened they are of conservative and pro-life Catholics learning who “Tom” Golisano is—a man who ran for governor three times on a pro-choice platform and gave $1 million last year for Barack Obama’s coronation in Denver.

Nick Healy cannot credibly claim anything about the events of the Stewardship Committee meeting. I was not disruptive—I simply asked questions regarding a report issued by the Auditor General of Florida, as well as other issues regarding the Ave Maria Stewardship Community District.  Asking questions is the job of a free press and of taxpayers.  That made them uncomfortable.  Mr. Healy was not there.  The minutes of the meeting and the audio recording have not been released.  Mr. Healy never spoke to me.

My ban from campus clearly demonstrates that individuals affiliated with Ave Maria University and the Stewardship Committee are privately meeting to develop a coordinated plan to chill my free speech and my freedom to move about the town of Ave Maria–movement which is limited now to a very restricted area —as the town is, essentially, intertwined with the university.

My husband and I own a home in the town of Ave Maria, where we have resided with our young children since 2007.  This is our permanent and only residence.

Who would want to buy or own a property in the town of Ave Maria, when developers and government (one and the same here) appear to be conspiring with some affiliated with Ave Maria University?

THE CHRONICLES OF AVE MARIA©: Open Letter to the Ave Maria University Board of Trustees – November 9, 2009

OPEN LETTER to the Ave Maria University Board of Trustees

(NOTE:  The Board of Trustees never responded to this letter).

Marielena Montesino de Stuart

My name is Marielena Montesino de Stuart.  I am a writer for The Wanderer– America’s oldest Roman Catholic newspaper.  The Wanderer is presented every week to Pope Benedict XVI, members of the Roman Curia, as well as Bishops on both sides of the Atlantic.  No one disputes The Wanderer’s history of defending Holy Mother Church.  I also write for The Roman Catholic World (my blog).

My husband and I own a home in the Town of Ave Maria, where we have resided with our young children, since 2007.  This is our permanent and only residence.

On Thursday, November 5, 2009 I received a telephone call from Branden E. Blackmur informing me that the Ave Maria University administration ordered that I be banned from the Golisano Press Conference, shortly before it was to begin, thereby cancelling an invitation that he had extended to me the day before at 3:49pm.  Mr. Blackmur  works for Falls Communications, and is in charge of extending invitations for Press Conferences at AMU.

In addition, the university administration ordered that I be banned, until further notice,  from the university campus– which they specified is private property.

The accusation for the basis of this outrageous and unjust measure is that I am “disruptive” at meetings– according to Branden E. Blackmur’s statements to me over the telephone. I responded that I have never been “disruptive” at any meeting, and that there is no reason why my invitation to the Press Conference should be withdrawn.   I asked for further clarification, and Mr. Blackmur would only say that this was the order issued by the Ave Maria University’s administration.  I told him that I would go to the Student Union building in hopes of obtaining further personal clarification concerning this ambiguous accusation.   Mr. Blackmur said nothing further.

My husband drove me to the north side of the Student Union building, with our children.  As I walked towards  the building, I could see T.R. Minick, Head of Security, two Sheriff Deputies, and two security guards approaching me—plus a Sheriff patrol car waiting nearby.  (See photo below).

I was stunned by the presence of so much law enforcement waiting for me.  I had never experienced anything like this, except in Communist Cuba.  When my husband and children realized what was happening they began to quickly follow behind me.

This show of force, this deplorable act, had been ordered by the Ave Maria University administration—the same administration that claims to uphold the highest moral and Catholic principles.

Who in their right mind would buy a home here?—where a law-abiding resident is treated as one living in a despotic state.

I asked Mr. Minick if this extreme and outrageous measure could be because inside that Student Union building a billionaire by the name of Blase “Tom” Golisano, well-known for his pro-abortion stance, was about to be honored by the Ave Maria University administration for having given a large donation?  Mr. Minick would not answer.

It is worthy of note that I have never attended a university meeting, nor have I ever been disruptive on university property, nor elsewhere.

The only meetings I have attended in Ave Maria are those conducted by the Ave Maria Stewardship Community District in the Town of Ave Maria, and are for property owners. These meetings have nothing to do with Ave Maria University.  The meetings are all audio recorded by the Board of the Stewardship District.  These recordings are made available as a matter of public record, and are evidence that I have never been disruptive.

I attended the last Stewardship District meeting on November 3rd– two days before the Golisano Press Conference.  Mr. Paul Roney, Chief Financial Officer  of AMU was present, since he also serves as a member of the District board.

Most important is the fact  that the university administration is overreaching into town government —by issuing orders to control town residents, based on what they deem acceptable behavior at public meetings.

The Ave Maria University administration stabbed the Town of Ave Maria in the heart, through the terrible choices it made on November 5, 2009.

A ban against me—is a ban against our family.  By issuing this unfair and cruel ban, the AMU administration has expressed total disregard for the closeness of our family, which is sacred.

My husband and I find ourselves trapped inside this remote town, with two young children—and no access to the institution that promised a church (which is part of the campus) lectures, sports events, a library, chapels, a cafeteria and deli open to the public—all on university property.

On Friday, November 6, I received an e-mail message from T.R. Minick, the Security Guard that waited for me and threatened me with an arrest the day before.  He issued two exceptions to the ban, giving me permission to go to church, and to the Adoration Chapel—without risking trespassing.  This is unacceptable.

Ave Maria University owns so much real estate on campus and in the Town of Ave Maria, all constituting private property, that it is impossible for anyone to know where the university property begins and where it ends—which leads me to an important question:

Who exactly issued the order to ban me, and is acting as my accuser—and does the decision made by this person override the power of the Board of Trustees?  Where is the evidence this person holds that I have been “disruptive at meetings”?

As of the time that I write this Open Letter, I have not received an explanation from the Ave Maria University administration concerning exactly how I have been disruptive.  Who will be banned next—and for what ambiguous reason?

The decision taken by the Ave Maria University’s administration to ban me—not just from the Press Conference, but from all the private property of the Ave Maria University campus, constitutes an attack on my character; therefore, I demand that the administration immediately issue a statement, with detailed evidence explaining this accusation.

Only the legal owner of the private property can lift the ban that is in place—not a security guard; therefore, I am respectfully requesting that this Board of Trustees oversee the complete  lifting of this ban, in writing and in the proper legal manner.

Finally, I would like to kindly request that a member of this Board of Trustees, who is not part of the AMU administration, respond to this Open Letter.

I remain sincerely,

Freedom of the Press in Ave Maria?  Think Again.

Marielena Montesino de Stuart

I am a writer for The Wanderer– America’s oldest Roman Catholic newspaper.  The Wanderer is presented every week to the Pope, members of the Roman Curia, as well as Bishops on both sides of the Atlantic.  No one disputes The Wanderer’s history of defending Holy Mother Church.  I also write for The Roman Catholic World (this blog).

Today, shortly before 11:00AM, my husband, my young children and I walked towards the Ave Maria University Student Union building in order that I could attend the  Golisano Press Conference, as a writer for The Wanderer and for The Roman Catholic World.

This Press Conference was to include the announcement of a large sum of money donated by billionaire Blase “Tom” Golisano, a controversial donor who recently moved from New York to Naples– whose political background and pro-abortion history stands in stark contrast with Tom Monaghan’s advertised mission of Ave Maria University.

UPDATE – Feb. 16, 2010: Mr. Golisano will be honored in perpetuity on the Ave Maria University campus, where a groundbreaking ceremony has taken place– for a building that will be erected bearing Golisano’s name.  The absolute absence of public indignation from the “pro-life” students, faculty and Ave Maria residents (except for this writer) is astounding.

Sheriff Deputy and Thomas Minick (Chief Security Guard) Threaten me with Arrest to Keep me Out of Pro-Abortion AMU Donor "Tom" Golisano Press Conference, at Ave Maria University

I was met outside the Student Union building by Mr. Thomas Minick, head of AMU’s Security, two Sheriff deputies and two security guards.  That makes five.  A Sheriff patrol car also waited nearby.  Yet, it is amazing that when the local Ave Maria jewelry store was violently robbed at gunpoint last year– they couldn’t even get one single Sheriff deputy out to this remote area, in time to catch the criminals– who are still at large.

I, on the other hand, had two Sheriff Deputies, plus three security guards– all assigned and ready for my arrest, plus a Sheriff patrol car ready to take me away.

Mr. Minick warned me that I would be arrested if I did not leave the university property.  I asked him why.  He said he had received orders to keep me away from university property because I am “disruptive.”  I asked him to explain, and I proceeded to ask him some questions, but he would not provide any answers.  He continued to warn me of my imminent arrest, if I did not leave.  One of the Sheriff Deputies moved close to me, and I was again warned that the Sheriff would proceed with my arrest.  Sadly, my young children, along with my husband, were witnesses to this incident.  I began to walk back to our car, but Mr. Minick insisted that he had to escort me out of the university property (as you would escort a criminal).

Never before in my life, have I had an encounter like the one described above, nor have I ever been asked to leave any premises.

To Invite or Disinvite:  That is the Question

On November 4th at 3:49pm I secured permission from Branden E. Blackmur to attend the Press Conference.  Mr. Blackmur works for Falls Communications and is responsible for coordinating matters related to the press.  Today, at 9:15am, Mr. Blackmur contacted me by telephone to inform me that I was being disinvited to the Golisano Press Conference, because I had been “disruptive” at ” meetings;”  furthermore, he said that I am not permitted on Ave Maria University’s campus, which is private property, until notified otherwise.    I responded that I have never been “disruptive” at any meeting and that there is no reason why my invitation to the Press Conference should be withdrawn.  Mr. Blackmur would not go into further details, except to say that this decision was made by the university’s administration.  I told him that I would go to the Student Union building in hopes of obtaining further personal clarification concerning this ambiguous accusation.

After all, Ave Maria University’s administration advertises itself as charitable and kind, and expects the rest of us to show absolute charity and kindness– even when one of  their university administrators gets in trouble with the law– an administrator whose responsibilities include setting an example for the students.

After Father Fessio’s two firings, after today’s events regarding Ave Maria University and ”Tom” Golisano– and their actions towards me in front of my young children and my husband– all of the claims made by AMU’s administration about high Catholic moral values, could not be further from the truth.

When Overreaching is an Understatement

It became obvious, to both my husband and I, that the meeting in question was a public meeting that took place on November 3rd, conducted by the Ave Maria Stewardship Community District in the town of Ave Maria.  This meeting was for property owners.  The meeting was audio recorded by the Board of the Stewardship District, and the recording must be made available by the District on their website (see below);  furthermore, all contents of the meeting, by law, must be made available to the public.

This meeting for property owners in the Town of Ave Maria had nothing to do with Ave Maria University, nor with its administration.

It was my right to attend this public meeting as a citizen taxpayer and property owner in Ave Maria.  The audio recording of the meeting  demonstrates that at no time was I disruptive.  In fact, it was another resident who interrupted the meeting and interfered with the questions that I presented to the board of the Stewardship District– primarily, “why is this Special District in non-compliance of Florida statues, pursuant to the Report from the Auditor General of Florida?”  The board never answered my question, and said that they would have their attorney review the matter.

Paul Roney, Chief Financial Officer of Ave Maria University was present, as a member of the board.

The Ave Maria University administration is effectively punishing me for having spoken at a public meeting, by attempting to silence me as a writer for The Wanderer and The Roman Catholic World, and by banning me from university property.  At the same time, this “private” university uses tax-free municipal bonds and uses the coercive power of the government in the process.

The following two articles from the Naples Daily News explain this further:

Ave Maria: Recipient of $128 million in tax-free bonds, so far
Ave Maria: Were tax-free bonds provided without proper accreditation?

Today’s decision to ban me from university property was based on what the university’s administration perceives to be objectional questions presented to the  town’s governing board– regarding matters that, again–  have absolutely nothing to do with Ave Maria University, or its administration.

It is worthy of note that I have never attended a university meeting, nor have I ever been disruptive on university property, nor elsewhere;  therefore their reference to  “meetings” is the  Stewardship District meetings.

The illogical and unfair action that the Ave Maria University administration took today is clear evidence of how this administration is overreaching into Ave Maria Town’s jurisdiction and government, as a way to further control and intimidate its residents and property owners.  This is another way in which the university’s administration silences public opinion, which is a violation of our constitutional rights.

Shock Waves

Today’s desperate attempt by the Ave Maria University administration to keep me away from the Golisano Press Conference is sending shock waves across the Catholic world of higher education, as well as the Church.  The volatile situation surrounding Golisano’s pro-abortion history and his large donation to Ave Maria University is a tremendous blow to parents, students, residents of Ave Maria– and Catholics across America.  This action on the part of the university’s administration constitutes a betrayal– since AMU’s administration claims to uphold the highest Catholic moral principles– an administration who recently took advantage of the Notre Dame incident to promote its “impeccable” pro-life image.

Pro-Life or Pro-AMU?

Ave Maria University has aggressively engaged well-intentioned and devoted Catholic students, as well as residents in the town of Ave Maria to picket outside of the new Naples Planned Parenthood Clinic.  Youth pro-life marches and an array of pro-life activities usually end up as promotional and fund-raising material for the university.

Golisano has given millions of dollars to pro-choice politicians– including Barack  Obama.

How can Tom Monaghan honor this man?

But public opposition is not expected.   Ave Maria University’s administration has a grip on everyone.  Most of the students are on some form of tuition aid– and the faculty has a history of silence, that is deafening.

Ave Maria, Florida

The Swamp– as an Alternative

“University private property”  includes the Oratory and its surrounding grounds, the Adoration Chapel, the chapel inside the Canizaro Library, the Ark Chapel inside the Student Union, the cafeteria inside the Student Union (which is open to the public)– not to mention all the intertwined areas where it is unclear to anyone, how far university private property reaches.

When my husband and I tore our lives apart to bring our young children to this so-called “Catholic town” with a “Catholic” university, we were promised access to the Oratory, chapels, libraries, amenities, etc.  As citizens of this great nation we never expected we would be lured into a town where our freedom of movement and our rights could be at risk. The constitutionality of the “special law” established for this town is indeed under public scrutiny. Read award-winning story, “Ave Maria, a Town Without a Vote– Now and Forever”.

Given the very large area that constitutes university private property– which I am being banned from, what is mostly left is a swamp.
