Victor flees from his "Abhorred Monster"

"SYNTHIA"-- The Modern Medusa

J. Craig Venter may not sleep well tonight.  He has introduced to the world  the first artificially created genome– named ”Synthia”.   Unlike the joyful reaction at the birth of  a baby, created by God, humanity is staring back at ”Synthia” with suspicion, akin to Athena’s transformation of Medusa, or Victor fleeing from his “abhorred monster”– a face too terrifying to behold.

Venter, who is president of the J. Craig Venter Institute, and lauded for being one of the first scientists to sequence the human genome, explained during a press conference that “Synthia” is “the first self-replicating species we’ve had on the planet whose parent is a computer.”

Julian Savulescu, an ethicist at Oxford University, described Venter’s announcement as follows::

“Venter is creaking open the most profound door in humanity’s history, potentially peeking into its destiny.  He is not merely copying life artificially or modifying it by genetic engineering.  He is going towards the role of God:  Creating artificial life that could never have existed.”

Professor Savulescu described the “unparalleled” risks:

‘This could be used in the future to make the most powerful bioweapons imaginable”

Here are some excerpts of the Vatican’s cautious reaction, published in The Globe and Mail’s AP report:

If it is used toward the good, to treat pathologies, we can only be positive” in our assessment, Monsignor Rino Fisichella, the Vatican’s top bioethics official, told state-run TV. “If it turns out not to be … useful to respect the dignity of the person, then our judgment would change.”

“We look at science with great interest. But we think above all about the meaning that must be given to life,” said Monsignor Fisichella, who heads the Vatican’s Pontifical Academy for Life. “We can only reach the conclusion that we need God, the origin of life.”

Another official with the Italian bishops’ conference, Bishop Domenico Mogavero, expressed concern that scientists might be tempted to play God.

“Pretending to be God and parroting his power of creation is an enormous risk that can plunge men into a barbarity,” Bishop Mogavero told newspaper La Stampa in an interview. Scientists “should never forget that there is only one creator: God.”

“In the wrong hands, today’s development can lead tomorrow to a devastating leap in the dark,” said Bishop Mogavero, who heads the conference’s legal affairs department.

On February 13th of this year, Benedict XVI spoke  during an audience of  the Pontifical Academy for Life.  This audience before the Holy Father took place as part of the academy’s annual plenary assembly.  The Holy Father spoke on the subject of bioethics:

Bioethical questions often throw light on the dignity of the person, a fundamental principle which faith in Jesus Christ … has always defended, especially when it is overlooked in dealings with the most simple and defenseless people”, he added. “Bioethics, like any other discipline, needs guidelines capable of guaranteeing a coherent reading of the ethical questions which inevitably emerge when faced with possible conflicts of interpretation. In this space lies the normative call to natural moral law”.

“Recognizing human dignity as an inalienable right has its first foundation in that law – unwritten by the hand of man but inscribed by God the Creator in man’s heart – which all juridical systems are called to recognise as inviolable, and all individuals to respect and promote. Without the basic principle of human dignity it would be difficult to find a wellspring for the rights of the person, and impossible to reach ethical judgements about those scientific advances which have a direct effect on human life”.

“When we invoke respect for the dignity of the person, it is fundamental that such respect should be complete, total and unimpeded, … recognising that we are always dealing with a human life”, said Pope Benedict. “Of course, human life has its own development and the research horizon for science and bioethics remains open, but it must be reiterated that when dealing with matters which involve human beings, scientists must never think they are dealing with inanimate and manipulable material. In fact, from its first instant, the life of man is characterized by the fact of being a human life, and for this reason it has, always and everywhere, its own dignity”.

“Conjugating bioethics and natural moral law is the best way to ensure” recognition for “the dignity that human life intrinsically possesses from its first instant to its natural end”.

Natural moral law is a guarantee for legislators to show true respect both for the person and for the entire order of creation. It is the catalysing source of consensus among peoples from different cultures and religions, enabling differences to be overcome by affirming the existence of an order imprinted into nature by the Creator, … an authentic call to use ethical-rational judgement to seek good and avoid evil”.

Critics come from all sides:

Those who support Human Embryonic Stem Cell Research,  such as Nobel laureate and geneticist David Baltimore–have not spoken favorably of Venter’s creation.  Dr. Baltimore spoke to the New York Times and described Venter as having ”somewhat overplayed the importance of this.”

Environmentalists like Eric Hoffman from Friends of the Earth denounced Venter, by stating on the FOE website:

Craig Venter’s lab has taken genetic engineering to an extreme new level.”

“These new synthetic chromosomes mimic billions of years of evolutionWe must ensure that strong regulations are in place to protect the environment and human health from this potentially dangerous new technology.”

“Mr. Venter should stop all further research until sufficient regulations are in place.”

The ethical-rational judgement which worries the Holy Father– is at the heart of another controversy, brought about by the expansion of biomedical research facilities in the United States.  The Town of Ave Maria, Florida may become the latest  possible location for such expansion.

The Jackson Laboratory, which holds ”workshops“ in Human Embryonic Stem Cell Research at its facility, and provides “resources” for Human ES Cell Research may be opening a facility in Ave Maria.    The Jackson Lab’s representatives are making  public appearances in Southwest Florida to drum up politicial and public support, which may involve  taxpayer’s dollars– but the residents of Ave Maria, the majority of which are Catholics, have not protested publicly.

Meanwhile,  Ave Maria University’s president, Nicholas J. Healy, Jr., said to the Naples Daily News,  ”If they [The Jackson Lab] were to locate here I think there would be very considerable benefits to the entire area…”, and Tom Monaghan was reported as saying, “Go ahead with it.”  (Read full article here).

At this rate–  “Synthia” may soon be moving to Ave Maria.

REMAKING  CATHOLICISM IN AMERICA:  The New Meaning  of “Pro-Life” and “Orthodoxy

by Marielena Montesino de Stuart

In the far eastern reaches of Portugal’s border with Spain, there are  outwardly unremarkable  churches–  but once inside, they stand as powerful and moving  tributes  to Christ.  These churches, built by the humble hands of countless saints and martyrs,  represent  hundreds of years of a Roman Catholic heritage– a heritage which is the heart of a peninsula,  that we sons and daughters proudly call Iberia.

During Benedict XVI’s recent trip to Portugal  he spoke about evangelization in an increasingly secularized society, and asked Portugal’s Catholic majority to assert their faith and moral values.  The Holy Father, speaking before a crowd of 200,000 in the city of Oporto, also said that those awaiting the message of the Gospel  are “not only non-Christian populations and distant lands.”  Nowhere could this message have been better received and understood than in the land of Saint Anthony of Lisbon (Padua).

Benedict XVI’s bold assertion of evangelization took  place in a region of people  known for being  unafraid to conquer and evangelize– with not much more than a crucifix in their hands;  however, the Holy Father emphasized that this “new evangelization” is not an attempt to establish Catholicism as a state religion.

Benedict XVI’s  message comes in anticipation of the establishment of a “Pontifical Council for New Evangelization. ” The Holy Father  repeatedly spoke about the role of Catholics as missionaries in a secular world—and made it very clear that “pruning back” is not the Church’s objective in the mission to evangelize.

But millionaire Tom Monaghan, self-proclaimed  remaker of American Catholicism, seems to disagree, as is evident in an interview with Canada’s Catholic Register  / PDF  (an interview unrelated to the pope’s visit to Portugal).  Mr. Monaghan suggests that liberal Catholics should embrace conservative principles or leave the Church entirely, then goes on to issue proclamations about “orthodoxy.”

Monaghan’s comments appear to be in conflict with the latest controversy in his Ave Maria, Florida real estate venture.

Thomas S. Monaghan

Monaghan  measures  his projected achievements, with the conviction that “founding and funding”  his educational projects  will bring about change, in addition to the influence that he claims Ave Maria University  can have on what he refers to– as  the other “so-called Catholic” institutions.

Monaghan’s  projected achievements include incredible calculations of how many priests, nuns,  theologians, etc., AMU will  produce by the year 2077.  This– from a university that has not even received  Catholic recognition from the local Bishop, pursuant to Canon Law.

Even the least discriminating connoisseur of American Catholic issues, has noticed by now that the “unorthodox”  Sean Patrick Cardinal  O’Malley was the guest of honor and celebrant at this year’s Ave Maria University’s baccalaureate mass, and recipient of an honorary doctorate.  Cardinal O’Malley scandalized Catholics who respect the Church’s teachings on the sanctity of life, when he presided over a  public funeral  for Senator Ted Kennedy—a  passionate public advocate of abortion.

LifeSite News described the situation as follows:

Pro-life Catholic leaders say that, since Kennedy may have disavowed his abortion advocacy before his death, a private Catholic funeral would be appropriate.  However, they argue, in the absence of Kennedy’s public repentance, a public Catholic funeral would heap scandal upon the Catholic Church and its pro-life teachings.”

During the planning of Kennedy’s funeral, Cardinal O’Malley rebuked the pleas of those who stand in defense of the sanctity of life;  sadly, the  good things His Eminence may have done during his religious life, have been cast into the shade of his actions during the Ted Kennedy public Catholic funeral.

Is honoring Cardinal O’Malley  what Mr. Monaghan considers  “orthodox”?  Or, could this be an ongoing  display of ignorance about what orthodoxy is all about?

TOM GOLISANO - Supporter of Hard-Core Pro-Choice Politicians and Pro-Choice Institutions is Ave Maria University's New Face of "Pro-Life"

In Ave Maria one can also see the redefinition and erosion of the meaning of “pro-life” –with Monaghan’s honoring of billionaire / politician Tom Golisano—who has given breathtaking financial support  to a long list of NARAL-endorsed politicians, including Barack Obama.

Monaghan has also raised eyebrows in pro-life circles with his recent  “Go ahead with it”– regarding  The Jackson Lab– a company that may move to Ave Maria.   The Jackson Lab holds Human Embryonic Stem Cell  Research workshops at its facility, and  provides resources for Human ES Cell Research.

The waters of Catholicism in America are turbulent indeed, but much like mid-16th Century Portuguese missionaries were able to accomplish conversions with hardly a cent in their pocket – Catholics will have to reaffirm the Church’s  sacred  tenets, a work that will depend on countless saints and martyrs.

These saints and martyrs will emerge from  pews filled with humble wretched sinners— that is,  Catholics in America who will refuse to acquiesce to  unsolicited millionaires, billionaires and fellow travelers , who consider wealth a means of effecting change in the Church.

About 280 miles east of Oporto, in the Spanish town of Ávila, Santa Teresa de Jesús can attest to that.

Barron Collier Companies (Tom Monaghan’s partner in the Ave Maria Town development)  opposes segment about Ave Maria Town in PBS Documentary,

 “Florida:  Heaven  on  Earth?”

Today at 8:00 p.m.,  Eastern Time,  PBS premiered a documentary titled “Florida: Heaven on Earth?” where the town of Ave Maria was examined as one of four spiritual communities in Florida.   Award-winning writer and producer, Lynne Howard Frazer,  approached me for the filming of the Ave Maria segment– and I agreed to be interviewed.

The program will be shown again on Friday, May 14 at 8:30 p.m.; Saturday, May 15 at 6 p.m.; and Sunday, May 16 at 6 p.m. and 11 p.m.

Several days before the premiere, as the media began announcing the documentary, Barron Collier Companies (Tom Monaghan’s partner in the Ave Maria Town development) contacted  WGCU’s Public Broadcasting Station in Southwest Florida, to voice their opposition to the segment involving Ave Maria. It is important to note that during the promotion of the documentary, no details were provided to the public regarding the segment about Ave Maria—other than to describe it as a  “spiritual community.”

Lynne Howard Frazer contacted me yesterday, and described the following events [quoted]:

The PR people for Barron Collier were VERY upset that no one from their organization was asked to be interviewed for the documentary. We sent them copies of the e-mail we received from Blackburn [Monaghan / Ave Maria University's public relations firm] stating that both Monaghan and Blake Gable respectfully declined to participate. Both WGCU’s GM and my Executive Producer had also requested interviews for this documentary, and were declined, so they can’t claim that we didn’t ask them to participate.”

They were very threatening to my Executive Producer.”

They repeatedly stated that the town is not a spiritual community and we cannot state that it is. (It’s stated quite plainly in the documentary that they claim it is not a Catholic or spiritual community).”

The public identity of the town of Ave Maria continues to be a contradiction, as well as a constitutional  concern.  Here are some highlights:

  •  Tom Monaghan originally promoted the town of Ave Maria as a “Catholic hub,” “a Christian community,” a “City of God”—and other religious and spiritual promotions—which he later recanted.  In a deposition dated February 20, 2008 Mr. Monaghan stated:

Well, I thought that a disproportionate amount of the people that moved there would be Catholics; serious Catholics.

  • Ave Maria University (a private educational institution) through its lawyers  recently became involved in Ave Maria Town public matters, by affirming that abortion is prohibited in Ave Maria, pursuant to amended town covenants. The AMU lawyers demanded  retractions from  a newspaper that published an article about abortion and the Ave Maria Town covenants. The same newspaper also published  an article by a conservative constitutional scholar who questioned the constitutionality of the amended town covenants.
  • Ave Maria University’s president, Nicholas J. Healy, Jr., has publicly welcomed the possible move of The Jackson Lab near Ave Maria University.  The Naples Daily News recently published  some of Mr. Healy’s views about The Jackson Lab, as follows:

If they [The Jackson Lab] were to locate here I think there would be very considerable benefits to the entire area…” said Nicholas Healy, president of Ave Maria University.  ”They will bring well-paying jobs and so on.  It will help real estate in the town.”

Human Embryonic Stem Cell Workshops are held at The Jackson Lab facilities.  The Jackson Lab also provides resources for Human ES Cell Research.  Human Embryonic Stem Cell Research has been condemned by the Vatican as an attack on the sanctity of human life.

  • The same Naples Daily News article described how Monaghan said  “Go ahead with it” for the welcoming of The Jackson Lab.  Mr. Monaghan is Chancellor of Ave Maria University.  Ave Maria University is an institution which claims to follow strict Catholic moral guidelines.
  • Barron Collier Companies (in partnership with Tom Monaghan) opposes the representation of Ave Maria as a spiritual community.

It is time that Tom Monaghan, Ave Maria University and Barron Collier Companies assume responsibility for the contradictory positions they have taken in the religious, spiritual and secular promotion of the town of Ave Maria.

Ave Maria University, as noted above, has become involved in legal maneuvers to put pressure on a newspaper that has printed articles about Ave Maria Town covenants.

This is now followed by Barron Collier’s “threatening” tactics against PBS, which are entirely inappropriate and unwarranted. These tactics constitute an attempt to censor PBS and interfere with freedom of the press, which is protected by the First Amendment.

NOTE:  PBS highly edited the Ave Maria segment from its original raw footage.
