Disciplinary Inspection Commission (DIC) Issues Report on Commissioner Fred Coyle

Commissioner Fred Coyle (Chairman)

by Marielena Montesino de Stuart

A Satirical Look at Commissioner Fred Coyle’s last few days in office

Something had to be done…

DISCIPLINARY INSPECTION COMMISSION (DIC)

Recent events involving the Jackson Lab fiasco  appear to have left a certain Collier County commissioner a bit discomposed.  A common occurrence in Florida politics.

So, a new citizen group has emerged, rightly named the Disciplinary Inspection Commission (DIC).

DIC plans to inspect, in the strictest sense of the word, the activities and behavior of Collier County commissioners who fail to enforce transparency in economic development– and who do not treat their constituency with kindness and respect.

DIC launched its operation by conducting a public poll, as Phase I of an inspection report on Collier County Commissioner, Fred Coyle.  Mr. Coyle was brought to DIC’s attention after he recently wrote a  Letter to the Editor of a local newspaper, specifically addressing a senior member of our community, including her political party affiliation– for merely exercising her First Amendment rights.  This has caused tremendous consternation and indignation among many citizens, who do not like seeing one of their finest be bullied by Chairman Coyle.

While some may see DIC’s initial disciplinary inspection as too severe– it is actually quite reasonable, compared to a more formal disciplinary inspection that DIC could launch, if Chairman Coyle does not heed the results of the following public poll:

胡锦涛 and the United States: The “Rehabilitation” of America

Hu Jintao, Nov 13, 2004

Hu Jintao

Is China trying to “rehabilitate” the United States?

by Marielena Montesino de Stuart

E-Mail: ContactTRCW@aol.com

As the United States loses its leadership position in the free world, more and more evidence is coming out of how it is becoming subservient to China.

On January 19, the White House honored communist dictator, Hu Jintao, with a state dinner of lobster, beef, fine wine and other delicacies (paid, of course, with taxpayer dollars)– which should make even the most liberal leaning American feel nauseated, when considering China’s ongoing spine-chilling human rights violations and censorship of free speech.

The same degree of indignation should be felt over any state dinner and reception ever thrown in the White House, honoring China’s communist thugs.

Who is “Hu”?

AsiaTimes offered the following description of Hu Jintao’s rise in the Communist Party ranks, and how he pleaded with communist officials to “rehabilitate” his own father– a tea-shop owner condemned and persecuted as a bourgeois capitalist, who died after suffering terrible physical torture as a political prisoner.  This is also an example of what happens when you encourage your son to get a college education, and he turns into a communist intellectual:

“Hu even ordered a restaurant banquet for local Communist Party officials so they could sort out the case over delicacies and rice wine and agree to rehabilitate his father.”

AsiaTimes August 27, 2004

The question is:  What is the United States trying to sort out with China– over lobster and fine wine?

Is the United States undergoing some form of “rehabilitation”?

Dissonance

Lang Lang is a Chinese-born pianist who has enjoyed all the benefits of our democracy and freedom, while simultaneously acting as an artistic ambassador for communist China.  What Americans may not know is that there are many other very talented artists and performers in China who are dissenters, and are not given the freedom of movement that Lang Lang enjoys.

During the state dinner for Hu Jintao, Lang Lang performed “My Motherland,” a Chinese propaganda piece, which is the theme song for “Battle on Shangganling Mountain,” a 1956 anti-American movie about the Korean War.

Hu Ping, a scholar and commentator for Radio Free Asia– indicated that “Lang Lang himself said that he had played the song many times before.   As a world-class Chinese artist, how could he not know the background?”

Lang Lang claims that he only played the melody of “My Motherland” because of its beauty.  Well, that would be like playing the melody of  L’Internationale and ignoring the fact that it stands for communism, socialism, and anarchy– all enemies of democracy.  It would be interesting to see if Lang Lang has ever tried to play the melody of God Bless America in front of the Chinese Communist Party.  After all, it too is a beautiful melody.

Lang Lang is an experienced international performer who knows what he’s doing when selecting his repertoire, particularly at a state dinner before the heads of two super powers– one of which is clinging to what’s left of its freedom and economy.

I suggest that Lang Lang go back to China, so he can spend the rest of his life performing for the masses on a cheap-sounding Chinese-made piano, then go whistle his tune on Shangganling Mountain.

Unless Lang Lang knows something that we don’t.

China, Eugenics– and why Hu Jintao should keep his wife Liu Yongqing close by

Where was Hu Jintao’s wife, Liu Yongqing, during this state dinner at the White House?  She was not listed in the formal announcement. Was she forced to stay back in China?  That’s not a good idea, considering China’s moral and social problems, as examined below.

But you see, female companionship does not seem to be a priority for Hu Jintao– since his country runs a  massive government-paid eugenics program, that includes the massacre of baby girls through forced abortion, including late-term abortion.  ”Gendercide”– which is gender-selective mass killing, is having a devastating moral and psychological effect on the current generation.

Although the communist government of China claims that gender-selected abortion, abandonment, and infanticide are illegal in China– the United States, Britain and human rights organizations– including Amnesty International, have all placed China’s “family planning” programs at the center of one of the most vicious campaigns in the history of eugenics, abortion and infanticide.

The British Medical Journal  estimates that China, as a result of this mass eugenic killing, will have to deal with a surplus of 32 million males under the age of 20– and the competition for wives will be fierce.  This is causing an increase in intergenerational marriages (young men with older women).  Considering this grim picture, Hu shouldn’t be leaving Liu back in China– lest he is willing to let Liu be swept off her feet, by a desperate, much younger man.
Even the old dowry system has been inverted in China.  Instead of the woman’s family paying the prospective groom– it is now the man’s family who is paying up to $5,000 to entice a woman into marriage– prompting the latest trend in ”run-away brides” as women grab the money and disappear.

Liu Xiaobo

I am certainly NOT a fan of the Nobel Peace prize committee– and Amnesty International definitely has a less-than-perfect record in the ’who-when-and-what’ world of human rights violations, particularly when it comes to abortion; however, the following AI report issued through its international secretariat in London is worth reading, considering the events surrounding Chinese dissident Liu Xiaobo, and the Nobel Peace prize he was unable to receive on December 10, 2010.  Liu Xiaobo is serving an 11-year sentence as a political prisoner, for “inciting subversion of state power”.

This report should also be carefully noted by anyone concerned about the lobster and fine wine that was served at the White House for Hu Jintao last week– as part of our “rehabilitation” program:

EXCERPT – [Regarding Liu Xiaobo’s empty chair at the Nobel Peace prize ceremony]:

It will hold the thousands of political prisoners and prisoners of conscience currently languishing in Chinese jails or under house arrest, victims of prosecution and persecution simply for having the courage to voice their views. People like Tian Xi, caught in a legal loophole and facing possible indefinite detention after battling for compensation after being infected with HIV and hepatitis following a blood transfusion as a child. Or Zhao Lianhai, serving a two-and-a-half-year sentence for seeking justice for babies made ill by tainted powdered milk. Or Chen Guangcheng, a blind human rights activist kept under unofficial house arrest after serving a four-year prison sentence for his involvement in a legal action against forced sterilizations and abortions carried out by the authorities on thousands of women in the Shandong province. [Here is the  Complete Report].

Amnesty International issued an urgent call to action on April 20, 2010 regarding thousands at risk of forced sterilization.  The irony is that Amnesty International also urges the public to direct their pleas to Hong Yuliang Zhuren, Chairman of the Puning City Population and Family Bureau– suggesting that the salutation be “Dear Chairman”!  It also suggests that pleas be sent to the mayor of Puning City and the secretary of the Jieyang City Communist Party, with “Dear Mayor” and “Dear Secretary” as salutations.  As an afterthought, and in very fine print, Amnesty International then suggests that the reader contact “diplomatic representatives accredited to your country”.

How about suggesting that American companies cease and desist from doing business with a country which persecutes and imprisons its citizens when they voice their dissent– and encourages and pays for the extermination of its own people!

God help us if “Hu” gets an even stronger grip on the United States, and we end up needing the assistance of Amnesty International!

EXCERPT [Amnesty International's Urgent Call to Action]:

URGENT ACTION: Local officials aim to sterilize 9559 people by 26 April [2010] some against their will, in a drive to meet family planning targets in Puning City, Guangdong Province, southern China.  [Here is the Complete Document]

China as a powerful destabilizing force

Nothing has changed with China’s communist government and its quest to destabilize entire regions.  Here is an excerpt from Rome and the African Continent:

EXCERPT:

One of the misconceptions about African civil wars is that they are often looked upon as isolated and localized social and political struggles.  Yet, China plays a significant role– since it is a major supplier of military equipment to Africa, thus fueling and supporting the ongoing massacre (while deceptively acting as “peacekeepers”).  China has been actively building large infrastructure projects in African countries that are notorious for their violation of fundamental human rights.  Through its aggressive involvement in Africa, China has created an influential platform from which it can exercise economic and political control.

In Sudan, the war-torn land of Saint Josephine Bakhita, the Chinese National Petroleum Company (CNPC) has developed an oil field and constructed a 900-mile pipeline to the Red Sea, so that oil can be sent to China.  Several African nations have entered into strategic partnerships with China, in exchange for lines of credit.   China has persisted in providing arms to Zimbabwe’s Marxist dictator, Robert Mugabe– a persistent  human rights violator.    The list goes on. — Rome and the African Continent by Marielena Montesino de Stuart, October 28, 2009

Meanwhile,  companies like General Electric, participate in the dangerous activity of sharing our technology with China, as described by the New York Times:

EXCERPT:

As China strives for leadership in the world’s most advanced industries, it sees commercial jetliners — planes that may someday challenge the best from Boeing and Airbus — as a top prize.

And no Western company has been more aggressive in helping China pursue that dream than one of the aviation industry’s biggest suppliers of jet engines and airplane technology, General Electric.

On Friday, during the visit of the Chinese president, Hu Jintao, to the United States, G.E. plans to sign a joint-venture agreement in commercial aviation that shows the tricky risk-and-reward calculations American corporations must increasingly make in their pursuit of lucrative markets in China.

G.E., in the partnership with a state-owned Chinese company, will be sharing its most sophisticated airplane electronics, including some of the same technology used in Boeing’s new state-of-the-art 787 Dreamliner. — New York Times, January 17, 2011

China is advancing rapidly– so a quick course in  简体中文 is in order.  You’ll need it when you find yourself under house arrest, begging for freedom.

HOLDING ON TO OUR CHEESE: Is the Jackson Lab Deal Really Gone?

Copyright 2010 Marielena Montesino de Stuart

by Marielena Montesino de Stuart

A Divine Comedy Special about Collier County, Florida, and the infamous “Jackson Lab Deal“

The Story

The Jackson Lab, which is based in Bar Harbor, Maine, specializes in breeding genetically altered mice for experiments– including Human Embryonic Stem Cell Research.

The Jackson Lab wanted millions of taxpayer dollars to open a new facility in the town of Ave Maria, which is located in rural Eastern Collier County.  The Jackson Lab’s “smoke and mirrors” proposal of a biomedical village in Ave Maria never convinced Collier County citizens– who demand authentic and transparent economic development.

So… a group of Collier County citizens– comprised of one journalist, Marielena Montesino de Stuart who resides in Ave Maria– and the rest mostly from Naples, publicly stood up to the big landowners and three county commissioners (Coyle, Fiala and Coletta) who were promoting what appears to be a taxpayer scam.

Meanwhile, back in Ave Maria the crickets were chirping.  Read about it HERE

Three influential articles written by renowned investigative journalist, Randy Engel (US Coalition for Life) were crucial in educating the public about the dark moral and ethical problems surrounding the Jackson Lab, and about Ave Maria’s silence in the face of these problems.  These articles may be read here: PART I, PART II and PART III.

The efforts of the above individuals who denounced, publicly protested, and took legal action against the Jackson Lab “deal”–succeeded in driving the Jackson Lab out of town.

But the Collier County citizens who publicly protested and took legal action are not letting their guard down.  Could the Jackson lab deal be reintroduced… or something similar?

Is it Safe to Come Out?

Collier County citizens are friendly creatures that love to come out and socialize.

But is it safe?

Is the “Jackson Lab deal” really gone?

Is it really, really gone?

It would be scary to come out and be surprised by another TAXPAYER TRAP!

Here’s today’s news about the fat rats that were trying to eat our cheese…

Jackson Lab’s Ties to Collier are erased

THE AVE MARIA-JACKSON LAB DEAL: Another Political and Moral Scandal in Florida’s History

by Marielena Montesino de Stuart

Falling apart…

Commissioner Fred Coyle (Chairman)

The infamous Ave Maria-Jackson Lab deal in Collier County, Florida, by all appearances, is dead.  At least for now.

But the ebb and flow of scams and corruption in Florida’s history would lead many to expect that this deal, or a similar one, will resurface.

There is no question that Collier County citizens will keep a close eye on the decisions being  made from this point forward, by the three county commissioners who stood behind the maneuvering of the Jackson Lab deal– Commissioners Fred Coyle (Chairman), Donna Fiala and James Coletta– until they indulge us with their departure.

Commissioner Donna Fiala

Commissioner James Coletta

The JAX Deal

Jackson is a non-profit genetics lab based in Maine.  The lab is also known as JAX.

By Friday morning, January 14, “the deal” for Jackson Lab  — that is to say, the proposal for millions of taxpayer dollars from the state and county, the commercial rezoning and the free land in Ave Maria (offered by Barron Collier Companies)  had all come to a screeching halt– after a lengthy and expensive legal and financial experiment in trying to lure the lab to Eastern Collier County.

But, Commissioner Fred Coyle, an ardent supporter of the scandalous Jackson Lab taxpayer proposal, had not even been notified directly by Barron Collier Companies that the free land for the Jackson Lab in Ave Maria had been yanked.

Meanwhile, Jackson Lab officials had announced that they were approaching Tampa and Sarasota as less hostile territories,  compared to Collier County– while simultaneously repackaging their taxpayer deal in Tallahassee for Florida’s new governor, Rick Scott.

This is how it was described by Chuck Hewett, VP and Chief Operating Officer of the Jackson Lab:

“I think it is fair to say we see a much higher risk of failure in Collier County due to all sorts of political challenges and interventions that have accumulated over the last five or six months.” Naples Daily News, January 12, 2011.

“…political challenges and interventions?”

Could Chuck Hewett possibly be referring to all the lawsuits and public protests in Collier County over the outrageous request for millions of taxpayer dollars– in exchange for the ’smoke and mirrors’ Jackson Lab deal, which never showed taxpayers any signs of authentic and transparent economic development?

These lawsuits, as well as an army of persistent and courageous opponents will be waiting, should the infamous Jackson Lab proposal be reintroduced in Collier County.

“A gift of God”?

Blake Gable - Barron Collier Companies

And what was happening as recently as a month ago?

Mike Hyde - The Jackson Lab

On December 14, Blake Gable of Barron Collier Companies, whose long job title is, President of Real Estate and Minerals Project Manager for the Development of the Town of Ave Maria, was enthusiastically promoting the Jackson Lab project, as a panelist during an Ave Maria Town Hall Meeting about the Jackson Lab.  Mike Hyde, VP for the Jackson Lab’s Advancement and External Relations, was also a panelist at that meeting.  Hyde’s job was to keep pushing the Ave Maria-Jackson Lab idea, as part of his “external relations” agenda.

The third panelist was Professor Michael Waldstein, who covered the subject of “ethics”.  Dr. Waldstein is employed by Ave Maria University and he is a resident in the town.   Waldstein shared his initial reaction to the Ave Maria-Jackson Lab project, as follows:

Professor Michael Waldstein

Fantastic!  This is a gift of God.  This is an answer to prayer“.

“A gift of God”?

I don’t think so.

This was to be a gift of millions of taxpayer dollars for what appears to be a scam.

Nothing ethical about that.

Go Ahead with It

Thomas S. Monaghan

Barron Collier Companies is in partnership with Thomas S. Monaghan  in the development of Ave Maria, a town in rural Eastern Collier County, where the Jackson Lab has been hoping to set up shop.  The Monaghan-Barron Collier partnership operates under the name of Ave Maria Development, LLLP.

Monaghan, a Catholic, is the former pizza king-turned Chancellor of Ave Maria University.  It was Monaghan who made the land available for the Jackson Lab, and gave the “Go ahead with it”– a highly controversial move, given that the Jackson Lab is also involved in the world of Human Embryonic Stem Cell (HESC) Research, by holding workshops and providing resources for HESC research.  The Catholic Church considers HESC research a grave crime against innocent human life.

Monaghan has stayed in the shadows of the Jackson Lab debate, and did not show up at the Ave Maria Town Hall Meeting on December 14, in spite of being the town’s most talked-about figure– at times due to idiosyncracies and controversies surrounding his Ave Maria experiment.  Apparently, he preferred having Blake Gable handle the peddling of the Jackson Lab project.  I can see why.

It is amazing, however, that Monaghan– who so actively promoted Ave Maria as a “Catholic town” (the overwhelming majority of residents in Ave Maria are Catholics) will not personally participate in public discussions about significant changes affecting the property of those who came to live in his well-advertised “City of God”.

It does not spoil my day”– or does it?

The office of the Collier County Board of County Commissioners is located in Naples– approximately 40 miles from Monaghan’s “City of God”.

Let’s take a look at Commissioner Fred Coyle’s tone and reaction on Friday, January 14, as he responds to a citizen’s comment via  electronic correspondence, while the news was spreading that the Jackson Lab deal had fallen apart.

It all started with an e-mail sent by Mary Storto to all five County Commissioners.  Mary Storto, a Naples resident, has been an outspoken and active opponent of the Jackson Lab taxpayer proposal.   In her e-mail, Ms. Storto references a commentary that had appeared that morning in a weekly publication called Collier Citizen:

Public Record [Comments appear in brackets]:

Subject: Mark Strain’s theory on JAZ [JAX]

I think JAX would have a better chance if certain commissioners stopped acting as “lobbyists” for JAX and started acting honestly and intelligently in the best interests of their constituency.

I like Mike Strain’s theory which I’m attaching herewith.

Sincerely, Mary Storto

But Commissioner Fred Coyle’s formidable support of the Jackson Lab deal (which Ms. Storto refers to as “lobbying”) – so important to the Ave Maria-Barron Collier team, was apparently not enough to keep Coyle from being ignored by Barron Collier Companies, as the deal was falling apart.

The following excerpt from the Naples Daily News describes the situation [comment appears in brackets]:

“Coyle was surprised he was not notified directly by Barron Collier of its decision in light of how heavily involved he had been in the project from the beginning.  “It does not spoil my day,” he [Fred Coyle] added. –Naples Daily News, January 14, 2011

The following e-mail response sent by Commissioner Fred Coyle to Mary Storto shows that January 14 may have been, in fact, definitely spoiled for Mr. Coyle by the collapse of the Jackson Lab deal.   But most of all, it shows that Mr. Coyle does not understand the expectations of his position as a publicly elected official, whose fundamental duty is to serve Collier County citizens with the highest standards of decorum:

Oooohhh isn’t this priceless!!!  The woman who has sat through our meetings (sometimes falling asleep) with signs insulting Jackson Labs now wants the project to have a “ better chance”.   She wants us to act honestly while she accuses us of being corrupt without the slightest evidence.   Her entire letter is a case study in the need to act “intelligently”.

Fred Coyle

To which Ms. Storto replied:

Oooohhh and aren’t you priceless unable to speak to me directly even though you responded to my personal e-mail address.

I am the woman, Mary Storto, who sat at the commissioners’ meetings and held signs….not insulting Jackson Labs…..only arrogant commissioners who believe in wasting taxpayer monies by financing a totally risky project without even giving taxpayers an opportunity to vote on it.

You, against the advice of your own attorney, chose to put the zoning question of whether three or four commissioner votes were required for something that has traditionally already been set for a major majority to an arbitrator and then proceded to vote positively on it even though Mr. Bell’s [THE JUDGE] decision is not even binding.

I do believe you’re corrupt Mr. Coyle. There certainly must be something in this whole deal for you personally somewhere.  I came to this decision because as I sat (sleeping) during other items on the agenda, I observed that many of your decisions were quite rational and fair.

Thus my conclusion that you certainly are not stupid, so you must be corrupt!

Sincerely,

Mary Storto

Good-bye, Chairman Coyle…

Mr. Coyle, as Chairman of the Collier County Board of County Commissioners, owes an apology to Ms. Storto– and to Collier County citizens, for his unfitting tone in a public written record, in the course of conducting business as a publicly elected official.

Commissioner Coyle also owes an apology to Collier County citizens for shamelessly voting against a referendum for the Jackson Lab proposal, thus denying citizens an honorable and democratic way of deciding how their taxpayer money should be spent.

Furthermore, Commissioner Coyle’s support of an unfair and flawed arbitration process and non-binding ruling, which deprives Eastern Collier County property owners of Equal Protection– is another decision which could cause serious long-term financial and legal damage to Collier County citizens.  The arbitration process, including the hearing conducted by Judge Kenneth B. Bell on December 11 and 13, 2010 (also supported by Commissioners Fiala and Coletta) was a prejudicial act which involved a select group of favored powerful developers and large landowners in Eastern Collier County– such as Barron Collier Companies and fellow travelers.

Finally, Commissioner Coyle should resign– if his goal as chairman is to proceed in an intelligent and rational manner.   This would set the right example for Ms. Fiala and Mr. Coletta.  Otherwise, Mr. Coyle’s presence as a commissioner will be a constant reminder of another embarrassing political experience in Florida’s history.

UPDATE  Jan. 20, 2011 -  The Naples Daily News ran several polls during the Jackson Lab scandal.  Now Collier County citizens are again letting their voices be heard through the following public poll:

Collier County Commissioner, Fred Coyle, should step down  (LINK)

LE MOULIN ROUGE at THE HOLY SEE: Are You Ready?

The Roman Catholic World

by Marielena Montesino de Stuart

E-Mail:  ContactTRCW@aol.com

Who controls the environment around Benedict XVI?

Part of the environment surrounding the Holy Father is cause for concern.

The recent performance of the Pellegrini Brothers at the Holy See (featured in a video below) — also referred to as the “Pellegrini Affair”– is an example of such a concern.  And as is well known in these situations, the word ”affair”carries negative connotations.

Legitimate questions are being asked as to who has access to the pope, and who has influence over certain decisions at the Holy See, which continue to create controversy.   Sometimes these decisions lead to actions contrary to Church teachings, and contrary to the atmosphere of reverence expected at the Vatican.

But most important, will the Holy Father publicly acknowledge these wrongful acts and correct them?

At a time when the Catholic Church is surrounded by scandals involving sexual abuse, it would seem appropriate that the Holy See make every effort to enforce reverence.   Even some of the stories being printed by L’Osservatore Romano (a newspaper at the service of the thinking of the pope“– overseen by his right hand man, Tarcisio Cardinal Bertone, the Secretary of State) have raised more than a few eyebrows, because of their absurd nature.

If the newspaper’s description is correct– then, the pope has been thinking about Ringo Starr, Michael Jackson, Homer Simpson and some pretty eclectic stuff.  That’s hard to believe, considering the challenges that Benedict XVI faces as the head of 1.1 billion Catholics.

But there’s more being added to the eclectic mix.

Now, it looks like Vatican dress formalities are being tossed out in the name of “artistic expression”– as in the case of the Pellegrini Brothers.

But first let’s examine the attire required when visiting the Vatican,  as well as artistic expression– since these are factors involved in the Pellegrini scandal.

Vatican protocol

“The throne of Peter”,  “The Vicar of Christ”– are some of the words that we utter when we think of the Holy See.  The Vatican is a solemn environment commanding the most formal protocol, in manners and in dress.

Case in point:  Catholic News Service (the official news service of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops) printed a story on July 17, 2009 outlining Vatican protocol as relates to attire:

EXCERPT:

Journalists not abiding by the dress code outlined by the Vatican press office or the Pontifical Council for Social Communications will be barred from entering the papal palace.

One sound engineer for a major U.S. news outlet got bounced at the door when he showed up without a jacket for the pool covering U.S. President Barack Obama’s visit.

His producer, who was dressed in the required dark suit and tie, had to fill in and was saddled with the soundman’s heavy recorder, battery packs and boom mike, which he then had to carry and operate while still trying to write up his own news report. The show must go on.

Pilgrims to the Vatican may have their own stories of disappointment or near misses to tell. On sweltering summer days in Rome, scores of visitors are turned away from St. Peter’s Basilica or the Vatican Museums because they’re not dressed decently.

Transparent clothing, halter and tank tops, spaghetti-straps, and shorts or skirts that don’t reach the knees are strictly forbidden.

Slap-dash adjustments are accepted; for example, a shawl or sweater can be draped in such a way that it covers bare knees or shoulders. One tourist was begrudgingly allowed in the basilica after using her spaghetti straps to secure two paper tissues over her bare shoulders.

A museum employee told CNS that dressing decently is a common courtesy; one is after all a guest in “a place deserving respect” when visiting the museums or a pilgrim in a place of worship when visiting the basilica.

Clothes do indeed make the woman and the man, and they can also make or break a visit to the Vatican.

Artistic Expression in the Vatican… “the breath of the Sacred”

The Vatican has a 2000-year history of collecting and archiving some of the most sublime creative expressions ever known to man.  All carefully preserved in the Vatican Museums– including the Pinacoteca, created under Pius XI (1922-1932) in a special building near the new entrance to the Museums.  All  for the glory of God.

Antonio Paolucci, Director of the Vatican Museums, offers the following introduction to visitors:

…you are entering into one of the most important sites for the history of human civilization. Here, in the Museums of the Popes of Rome, built-up and enriched over five centuries, you will resonate with the rich buzzing of great history and, almost, the breath of the Sacred. On entering into the Vatican Museums you will be immersed in the glory of Art and of Culture put in the service of Faith.
The greatest artists of all time will welcome you: Raphael in the Stanze, Michelangelo in the Sistine Chapel, Giotto, Leonardo, and Caravaggio in the Pinacoteca, Van Gogh, Matisse and Moore in the area dedicated to modern religious art. You will encounter, through the Laocoön Group and the Apollo Belvedere, the greatest masterpieces of Classical Antiquity. You will encounter centuries and millennia as you enter the Etruscan and Egyptian Museums, along with non-European civilizations in the Ethnographic Missionary Museum.

Le Moulin Rouge at The Holy See

For Roman Catholics, and non-Catholics alike, the Vatican has always been a holy place.   A different place.  A place unlike Le Moulin Rouge.

The recent performance of the Pellegrini Brothers challenges the notion of Vatican formality, as a sacred space– and has opened the door to legitimate scrutiny and speculation– because of the dissonance of this decadent performance in a holy environment.  As such, it is hard to understand how the following display could have taken place in front of Benedict XVI:

THE JACKSON LAB DEAL: Outsmarting the Chimp

by Marielena Montesino de Stuart

A Divine Comedy Special on “The Jackson Lab Deal”

Steering Committee for Collier Gets to Work, LLLP

“The Jackson Lab deal” in Collier County, Florida, is nothing but monkey business.

Forty eight hours ago some thought it was all over.  So quickly.

The Jackson Lab announced that it withdrew its $50 million application to the state of Florida for first-year funding– as part of their Ave Maria-Jackson Lab project, in rural Eastern Collier County.  The Jackson Lab is apparently now actively reworking its image in front of the new governor– up in Tallahassee.

But the “Jackson Lab deal” is like the drunk that won’t pay and keeps sneaking in through the bar’s back door.  Each time there’s a new promise, and he keeps running up the tab.

Well, we’ve already ran a pretty steep tab with the taxpayer dollars spent in Collier County, by putting up with the Jackson Lab nonsense.

But the drunk is sneaking in again, this time disguised as “economic diversity”– including of course, support for– guess what?

The JACKSON LAB

While The Jackson Lab works on its makeover in Tallahassee, a new group has been unveiled bearing the name Collier Gets to Work, Inc. – (not to be confused with the very smart group featured above).

Some hard-core Jackson Lab deal supporters who are members of  Collier Gets to Work, Inc., appear to be recycling themselves under a new public relations spin.

Are they trying to resell us the “Jackson Lab deal”?

That would be a ridiculous attempt, given that a public poll showed that more than 80% of responders are against this taxpayer deal, not to mention the public protests and lawsuits filed to stop the Jackson train wreck.

Records from the Secretary of State show that Collier Gets to Work, Inc., is headquartered at the offices of the Economic Development Council of Collier County– the folks that helped bring us the Jackson Lab nightmare!

This deserves our first ”Laughing Pup Award” of the year!

Now, let’s catch our breath.  These folks at the new Collier Gets to Work, Inc.,  really want us to focus on “life sciences” as the best means to create new jobs– and no doubt reach into taxpayer pockets.   Yes… that’s the new spin– “life sciences”.

How charming.

Monkey business

Let’s take a look at some fields included in “life sciences”.  Can you pick out a familiar one?  You know, the unproven and controversial one that Jackson Lab wants to experiment with in Collier County, using our taxpayer dollars?:

Agrotechnology,  Bio-engineering, Bio-Medical Science, Biochemistry, Biocomputing, Biocontrol, Biodynamics, Bioinformatics, Biology, Biomaterials, Biomechanics, Biomedical sciences, Biomolecular engineering, Biomonitoring, Biophysics, Biopolymers, Biotechnology, Botany, Cell biology, Cognitive neuroscience, Computational neuroscience, Developmental biology, Ecology, Environmental science, Evolutionary biology, Evolutionary Genetics, Food Science, Genetics, Genomics, Health Sciences, Immunogenetics, Immunology, Immunotherapy, Medical devices, Medical imaging, Medicine, Microbiology, Molecular biology, Nanotechnology, Neuroinformatics, Neuroscience, Oncology, Optometry, Personalized medicine, Pharmacogenomics, Pharmacology, Physiology, Plant sciences, Proteomics, Structural biology, Systems biology, Tissue engineering, Zoology, etc., etc., etc.,

Which one is it– ladies and gentlemen of Collier Gets to Work, Inc.?

We’ve already been put through enough ‘smoke and mirror sessions’ with the Ave Maria-Jackson lab deal.

Will the taxpayer experiment involve  Personalized Medicine?

Will it now involve Evolutionary Genetics?   You know… monkey business?

Collier County taxpayers want to know.

THE JACKSON LAB TACTICS: Will taxpayers be left holding the “Dead Man’s Hand”?

The Roman Catholic World

by Marielena Montesino de Stuart

Gambling with Taxpayer Money

The Jackson Lab taxpayer proposal is a gamble.  As in poker, the Jackson Lab’s new hand could be a bluff– to continue their relentless pursuit of taxpayer money.

As a prospective non-profit, non-taxpaying newcomer to Florida, it appears that The Jackson Lab is making a tactical move– by presenting a more positive image for the Sunshine State’s new governor, Rick Scott.

The Jackson Lab’s image is certainly in need of a makeover, since much of its track record in Collier County has had little to do with sunshine, and much to do with backroom deals and sealed records.

New Tactics

The Jackson Lab announced today that it withdrew its $50 million application to the state of Florida for first-year funding.  This looks like an effort to regroup and appear more in tune with the new governor’s financial plans.  No doubt, their actions will be closely scrutinized by citizens and organizations clamoring for authentic open economic development.

With the ongoing legal actions and public protests against The Jackson Lab proposal by Collier County citizens– it would be safe to say that the withdrawal of this application is a manifestation that The Jackson Lab lost its initial battle in Collier County.

It is expected, however, that The Jackson Lab will attempt to fast-track its new approach in Tallahassee.

Whether The Jackson Lab can convince Rick Scott that it is worthy of hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars is yet to be seen.  In addition, Governor Scott has announced the restructuring of various agencies, and no one knows exactly who and what will get eliminated, or made part of even larger agencies.

One thing is certain– the pressure for access to taxpayer money will continue, and if possible, the Jackson Lab and its supporters will try to get even more, unless they can come up with committed private investors, which hasn’t happened up to now.   It’s all a game of smoke and mirrors.

The cards that The Jackson Lab has been willing to show Collier County amount to a losing hand.   All that The Jackson Lab and its minions can do is shuffle a different deck in Tallahassee.

At the end, let’s hope that the taxpayers will not be left holding the “dead man’s hand” [1].

DANGEROUS TIMES: Folks in Rural Eastern Collier County Take Emergency Measures after Judge Kenneth B. Bell’s Arbitration Ruling

by Marielena Montesino de Stuart

A Divine Comedy (or Harsh Reality) New Year Special

Folks all over rural Eastern Collier County, Florida,  began taking emergency measures, after Judge Kenneth B. Bell’s arbitration ruling– announced on December 27, 2010.

As an example of refined taste, and as a way to show what the little folks in the rural eastern swamplands mean to him, Judge Bell delivered his ruling as a “No Equal Protection” surprise gift– after Christmas.

Yes, a surprise indeed, and one that should make Collier County citizens feel like puppets– since no official notification about this arbitration hearing was ever sent to property owners and citizens affected by the outcome of this hearing.  Such disregard for property and a citizen’s rights should render the arbitration process illegal.

All men are created… not so equal?

Based on his simple-majority (3 votes) ruling for the Rural Land Stewardship Area, it appears that Judge Bell believes that all men are created more, or less equal– compared to the super-majority (4 votes) required for zoning changes in other parts of Collier County.

This arbitration ruling also conveniently opens the door for the zoning changes needed to build the infamous ”Ave Maria-Jackson Lab project”– in the location envisioned by the powerful Eastern Collier County landowner, Barron Collier Companies.

“The Jackson Lab proposal” seeks millions of dollars in public funding– also known as corporate welfare.   Several lawsuits have been filed against this taxpayer proposal–by Collier County citizens, and one Collier County corporation.  Calling this project “infamous” will be an understatement, when the county tallies up the taxpayer consequences of the Jackson Lab proposal.

Catholicism and genetics come together

A little background:

Former pizza mogul, Catholic philanthropist and Chancellor of Ave Maria University, Thomas S. Monaghan, made the land available for the Jackson Lab, which specializes in the field of genetics.   The Jackson Lab is also involved in the controversial world of Human Embryonic Stem Cells (HESC)– by holding workshops and providing resources for HESC research.

The Catholic Church considers HESC research a grave crime against innocent human life, and the local bishop is not happy about the Ave Maria-Jackson Lab idea.  But, hey– Monaghan did his own ”due diligence” and proceeded to make the land available for the lab.

Meanwhile, Barron Collier Companies and Monaghan are partners in the development of Ave Maria.  Quite a hodgepodge of religious and monetary ambitions.  God help us.

Predatory Taxpayer Scam?

Aside from the welter of ethical controversies surrounding the Jackson Lab– at the end of the day, the Ave Maria-Jackson Lab project looks more like a predatory taxpayer scam– a perfect match for the swamplands of Eastern Collier County.

Suffice it to say, the news of Judge Bell’s decision helps advance the real estate experiment that folks in the town of Ave Maria have been put through– which so far has included its promotion as a   “Catholic town”, ”Every Lifestyles Town”, “Futuristic Genetics-Biomedical Cluster Town”– and now, who knows what’s coming to this rural Eastern Collier County town!

Even though the arbitration ruling is non-binding– and will most probably be challenged in court, it has upset and worried many a property owner and resident.  According to Judge Bell, all that is needed are three swift little votes from the Board of County Commissioners to change zoning in the huge Rural Land Stewardship Area, covering 195,000 acres.  Eastern Collier County falls within the Rural Land Stewardship Area.

Puppets in a Disaster Zone

There’s no sense in pondering the potential harrowing decline in property value that this ruling could bring upon the Rural Land Stewardship Area– adding insult to injury, given that property values have dropped enough already.  There are, after all, more important things to worry about– considering that a toxic waste dump could be built behind your backyards– with just three little votes.

So, here are a few timeless emergency precautionary measures for Rural Civil Defense that property owners and residents of rural Eastern Collier County have started to follow.

And yes, maybe it is time to…

CONTACT YOUR ”COUNTY AGENTS”–

Commissioners Fred Coyle, Donna Fiala and James Coletta

(since they voted in favor of the arbitration process)

Remember… there’s NO such thing as Equal Protection!

TOPICS FOR DISCUSSION:  Who is Judge Kenneth B. Bell? + Collier County Arbitration Hearing held December 11 and 13, 2010 regarding votes needed for zoning changes in the Rural Land Stewardship Area + The Jackson Lab +  Barron Collier Companies + Thomas S.
