CASTEL GANDOLFO - 2

Apostolic Palace of Castel Gandolfo

Father Joseph Fessio SJ, spoke to the Italian daily Il Riformista regarding the upcoming conference with Pope Benedict XVI, to be held in the Apostolic Palace of Castel Gandolfo, from the 27th to the 30th of August.

The theme of this annual meeting with former students of  Benedict XVI will be the “Mission of the Church” and “its justification” –and “the mission in dialogue with mankind, and the different cultures and religions.”  The main participants will be Professor Peter Beyerhaus, a Protestant theologian, and Horst Bürkle, an evangelical theologian who converted to Catholicism– now profesor emeritus at the Ludwig-Maximilians University of Munich.   The Archbishop of Vienna, Christoph Cardinal Schönborn, will also be present.

During the interview with Il Riformista, Father Fessio  said that after the theme’s presentation, and after taking part in the discussions– the Holy Father concludes with an instructional summary.   Father Fessio expressed his appreciation for this annual encounter since “after being elected  Pope we thought that the meeting would be abandoned, but he proposed to continue”.

Ave Maria, Florida

Father Fessio– who did not discuss his second firing from Ave Maria University during his interview with Il Riformista, said that the participants in this meeting have at least one meal with the Holy Father.   Father Fessio added that during the breaks that are taken in the course of this encounter  “we drink coffee, eat cookies, we speak amongst ourselves, and with the Holy Father.”

Hmmm… “speak amongst ourselves” — and without fear of retaliation?   That’s much more than Father Fessio  could ever hope for at Ave Maria University!

Will Benedict XVI get an earful about Ave Maria University’s administration, under the control of Tom Monaghan, Nick Healy– and friends?
