A congressional hearing was launched today to examine radical Islam’s objectives.
Congressman Peter King (R) from New York introduced the idea of holding these hearings in order to protect America from a terrorist attack, by examining homegrown radicalism. King is the chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee.
In defending the hearings King said , “I’m not gonna give in to political correctness,” and added, “this committee cannot live in denial.”
The New York Republican pointed to recent terror plots in the United States as the catalyst for holding these hearings.
This was Mr. King’s opening statement today:
President Obama has been through some internal struggles, division– and handwringing, over the issue of terrorism. A book titled “Obama’s Wars” by Washington Post journalist, Bob Woodward, describes incidents in which Admiral Dennis C. Blair, then the national intelligence director, argued with Rahm Emanuel, the former White House chief of staff, and John O. Brennan, the counter terrorism adviser. Brennan is an expert in Middle Eastern affairs, and speaks Arabic.
In his book Woodward describes how, in May 2009 during a daily intelligence briefing, Adm. Blair warned the president that radicals holding American and European passports were undergoing training in Pakistan with the objective of attacking their homelands. Rahm Emanuel responded by pointing a finger at Blair and saying, “You’re just trying to put this on us so it’s not your fault.”
Woodward’s book also describes how Adm. Blair argued with Brennan about a report on the December 25, 2009 failed terrorist attack on an airliner, as it prepared to land in Detroit, Michigan.
Adm. Blair ended being forced out by President Obama.
