Someone has to say the truth…

"What is even more lamentable is the fact that Francis is doing all this in the shadows of the egregious rhetoric that is coming out of the Knesset. A rhetoric which is highly offensive to Christians."

I have always held that life is a series of contrasts.  None was more vivid this past week than the contrast between the woman in Sudan, Meriam Yahya Ibrahim, who was willing to be executed for affirming her Christian faith– and Francis in the Vatican, who appears to have “tucked” the pectoral cross under his sash  more than once, while meeting with rabbis in Israel– as well as in the Domus Sanctae Marthae, where he resides.

We should not be surprised.

Francis’s religious / social / political correctness began immediately after his election to the Throne of Peter.  These tendencies were also evident during his years as Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio in his native Buenos Aires, where he was known for participating in interfaith ceremonies and tango masses. That’s right. Tango masses.

On the other hand, due to Meriam’s courage in defending her Christian faith– and the overwhelming international outrage over her death sentence, a Foreign Ministry official in Khartoum has announced to the BBC that Meriam, who just gave birth in prison to a baby girl, will be freed in a few days, together with her 20-month old son who has been living with her under barbaric conditions on death row. She gave birth to the baby while being shackled to the floor.

UPDATE:  The Embassy of Sudan in Washington DC is unyielding in the case of Meriam.  This press release is contradicting the communication coming out of the Foreign Ministry in Khartoum.

In contrast, Francis has received harsh condemnation in Israel, in spite of his “religiously correct” interfaith efforts during last week’s visit to the Holy Land, his accidentally? “tucked” pectoral cross — and his passionate dedication to reaching out to Jews.  I am not surprised that the mainstream Catholic press chooses to ignore this reality.

But Rome’s chief rabbi knew things would not go well for Francis, stating that  Jews have nothing to discuss with the Vatican when it comes to interfaith dialogue. This statement was made a few days before Francis’s arrival in Israel.

Shortly before Francis’s arrival in Jerusalem, hundreds of Orthodox Jews gathered outside the Old City walls on Mount Zion, to protest Francis’s visit.  In the following photo an Orthodox Jewish man is seen protesting near the Cenacle. The Israeli government had to deploy 8,000 extra police officers to protect Francis during his brief visit to Israel.

So, while Francis serves Kosher delicacies to Jewish guests at the Domus Sanctae Marthae– and bends over backwards for Tel Aviv, he gets criticized for not doing enough.

What is even more lamentable is the fact that Francis is doing all this in the shadows of the egregious rhetoric that is coming out of the Knesset. A rhetoric which is highly offensive to Christians.

Meanwhile, Meriam in Sudan, has been eating prison food for affirming her Christian faith before her Moslem captors.

We pray that Meriam will soon be free. No one can claim that she accidentally “tucked” her Christianity under her wedding veil.
