The Interfaith Prayer Summit summoned by Francis in the Vatican has taken place today.

In light of this unprecedented event, where the Vatican has allowed Moslem and Jewish prayers to take place on the sacred Catholic grounds of the Vatican Gardens, a few steps from Saint Peter’s Throne, it is fitting that we consider our glorious Catholic history, such as the surrender of Mohammed VII at Granada (link requires translation) before the Catholic King and Queen of Spain, Fernando and Isabel.

We should also consider the greatest naval battle ever fought, the Battle of Lepanto, which saved the Christian West.

Indeed, on a day like today we must pray for all the Christians who have died and continue to die in the propagation of the Christian faith in every corner of the earth.  Their courage gives us strength in these very dark times.

Last, but certainly not least, on this Pentecost Sunday we should also meditate on the Acts of the Apostles– as a reminder of the fear that the apostles felt as they stood in the Upper Room and considered the overwhelming corruption and opposition that surrounded them.

Save yourselves from this perverse generation…

The Acts of the Apostles, Chapter 2, 36-40

[36] Therefore let all the house of Israel know most certainly, that God hath made both Lord and Christ, this same Jesus, whom you have crucified.

[37] Now when they had heard these things, they had compunction in their heart, and said to Peter, and to the rest of the apostles: What shall we do, men and brethren?

[38] But Peter said to them: Do penance, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ, for the remission of your sins: and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

[39] For the promise is to you, and to your children, and to all that are far off, whomsoever the Lord our God shall call.

[40] And with very many other words did he testify and exhort them, saying: Save yourselves from this perverse generation.
